Cold Nights, Hot Reads Blog Hop

Thanks for joining me at the Cold Nights, Hot Reads blog hop. There are two contests to enter - mine and the hop-wide giveaway. Good luck!

Cold enough for you? It is for me, I've had enough of winter. Last week the kidlet missed an entire week of school because of the weather, and our backyard gleamed like a skating rink. We could have skated, too. We had no powder, it was slick all the way.

So, how about some hot reads to keep away the cool? Love is Bliss is on sale for 99 cents (ARe / AMZ / BN) in eBook - two novellas in the Bliss universe. Here's a preview:

Living in Bliss, New Jersey has it perks, unless you're a shifter looking for love or a human looking for peace and quiet. Not only does Calla Savitch, owner of Shear Bliss salon, have to deal with warring panthers and werewolves with overlapping appointments, she's fed up with their constant matchmaking attempts. The last thing she wants especially is a hook-up with the one shifter who broke her heart years ago. Handsome were-panther Caleb Houlihan still nurses the guilt of Calla's heartbreak, but when presented with a second chance to woo her he is reluctant. Calla may forgive his youthful indiscretions, but when she discovers his aunt's true motive for wanting them together, will she send him packing?

Betrothed for years to Malcolm Weaver, Trisha Houlihan has grown tired of archaic panther shifters ways and wants to live on her own terms. A chance meeting with a hot stranger serves to spark her rebellion, but backfires when she discovers she's fooling around with her intended. Malcolm isn't keen on old traditions, either, but there's something about Trisha that inspires him to make an exception. Trisha is certainly exceptional, unlike other she-panthers, and he is convinced they were meant to be, regardless of the circumstances that brought them together. Trisha wants to resist, but her growing attraction to Malcolm proves problematic. Can these two find a balance between tradition and passion and create a happily ever after?

On this stretch of the Jersey Shore, it's a different "situation"!

My most recent work is in the Sexy To Go, Volume 2 collection. An Arresting Development is an MM short with a geek hero and a man in uniform:

“I am related to an award-winning actor. I have bungee-jumped off the New River Gorge Bridge. I blew a cop to get out of a speeding ticket.”
On hearing the last one, Wynton Keynes choked on his beer. Droplets of foam sizzled down his lip and rolled over his chin to the general delight of his friends. He reached for a napkin, thinking that everybody else at the party expected Diane’s friend to speak so frankly during this round of “Two Lies and a Truth.”
Mitch Lowry canted his head to one side and grinned at him. “Speaking of white stuff dripping from a man’s chin…is that your final answer?”
Wyn glared at him, but only for a moment as he shifted his concentration. He had on a new Polo shirt and didn’t want it ruined on the first wear.
“Caught you by surprise, guy?” Mitch needled him. “You don’t think I look the part to seduce a cop?”
“My name is Wyn, not Guy. I don’t judge books by covers, either.” Wyn balled the red tissue square in his fist. Mitch’s choice of words bothered him, as though he assumed things merely on sight. Wyn was gay, after all, and on the outset looked like any man. Not to say that gay men looked different. No hip-swaying, finger-snapping caricature here, but he didn’t think less of anybody who acted with flamboyance.
Diane’s friend, by comparison, rocked an athletic frame that drew appreciative glances from every woman at the party. A few men, too, but Wyn suspected some of his straight male friends wanted to look like Mitch in their own pants rather than get into his, and therefore studied him for inspiration.
Such tight jeans, too. One couldn’t see it now, for how Mitch lounged on the carpet with his back against the couch, but Wyn called up the image of Mitch’s firm ass molded in denim. He couldn’t deny wanting to bury his face between two such globes. Memories of his last romp in the hay fuzzed in his head. A former boyfriend he refused to name, even to himself, for fear he’d materialized like Beetlejuice and cause havoc.
The teasing aside, this Mitch seemed nice. Diane had squired the man around the living room and kitchen like a prize pet, though Wyn didn’t mistake how he shied from her touch when she got clingy. The two were neighbors, and that’s all Wyn got from his friend about him. He didn’t press for more information after the ferocity in her gaze stunned him back to the snack table.
“Which is it, then? What’s the truth?” Diane spoke now. Apparently everybody at the party wanted his guess. They stared down Wyn with eager expressions.

Hope you'll pick up both titles today. Good luck with the contests below!

Monday Muddle: Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day

See above for the blog subject reference, especially if you're not into Tull.

You'd think with my being blocked in by frozen tundra I got a lot of reading and writing done. Heh. Frozen tundra meant no school for an entire week, which meant people in the house, the TV on, people hovering and yap yap yap. I managed to hen peck a few paragraphs here and there, enough to finish The Sweetest Dare (FF), which may clock in at 30k words after the next round of self-edits before I pass it along. Next up is to finish Dare's Destiny (FF), now sitting at 13k (but I anticipate huge cuts before it gets better).

I did read, though, when I wasn't sweating through a cold. I liked Seth Grahame-Smith's The Last American Vampire (ARe / AMZ / BN / KOBO). From my real-life GR account:

The Last American Vampire takes up from where Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter ends, but I don't think it's necessary to have read the first book prior to this. There are references to the first book, but LAV takes the reader in a different direction. Where Lincoln basically covered the years of the president's youth and administration, LAV is a more ambitious work and spans the post-Civil War to nearly the present day, with the possibility of a third book if that's how you interpret the ending.

Henry Sturges is a vampire created during the first English settlement of the New World, and his life is a "Forrest Gump"-style panorama of adventures, in that he connects with many of the noted people in their respective eras. We find a few of history's greatest mysteries and tragedies are actually attributed to vampire involvement.

I liked ALVH, but I think I enjoyed this book more because with the expanded time gaps there's more to do. When you discover Henry's prime nemesis it's rather clever how that ties into specific events. It's a horror in the gory sense, though. Some very bloody scenes.

Also read, Farewell, Dorothy Parker by Ellen Meister (ARe / AMZ / BN / KOBO). From my GR review:

I liked this story, but I feel it falls short of lovelovelove. This is the story of a writer named Violet who deftly skewers with movie reviews but in real life is a marshmallow. Through some comedic bungling at the Algonquin she comes into possession of a guestbook tied to Mrs. Parker's ghost, who becomes a confident and mentor. It sounds like an awesome fantasy, and as much as Violet admires Mrs. Parker she seems reluctant to follow the woman's forthright advice throughout the book. Without spoiling the entire story, I'll just say that Mrs. Parker seems to benefit another character more.

I wanted to flip over this, and while I liked it I get the feeling Meister held back in her development of Mrs. Parker. Then again, she's always struck me as a very difficult type to pin down. Meister mentions in the acknowledgements that the plethora of Jane Austen-character books inspired her to write a Mrs. Parker novel because there are few, if any. I wonder if the reason it hadn't been done until was because nobody felt certain how to get the character done correctly.

I'll have more read to share this week, as soon as I'm done with the writing and editing.

Monday Muddle: Too Cold To Do Anything

I love to travel, but I dislike that period of adjustment when I return home. I struggle sometimes to get back into a familiar routine, especially if I have to work the next day. I spent the weekend in Brooklyn - some of it anyway. The trip consisted of eight hours driving up, train and subway time, a few hours of sleep, eight hours driving home. Brooklyn time amounted to about six hours. It's like that scene in Seinfeld where Jerry's explaining to Elaine how quickly a weekend at his parents' will fly. Between sleep and travel, it's only twenty minutes.

It feels like that now, but I've been cold way longer than twenty minutes. My friend snapped this pic of me on the train to Grand Central. Doctor Nesmith goes to the city. I had on two other layers underneath that jacket and it still wasn't enough.

Next time I go anywhere, it will be A) summer, or B) sooner where it's warm.

I didn't get any reading or writing done over the weekend. I do understand, though, that there are at least eight stories total in the upcoming Sexy To Go, Vol. 2. Not sure how many are MM like mine. In the meantime, I'm cover stock shopping and doing other things. You can pick up M-Squared at ARe for 30% off this week, and hopefully I'll have news on other writing to come.

50% Rebate On All My Books At All Romance

Won't you be my sweetheart today? Whether or not you celebrate Valentine's Day, I hope you are enjoying the weekend. I'm actually on the road today doing something special with the kidlet, but I wanted to let you know All Romance's 50% Rebate is happening today only. That means all of my titles at ARe are half off after rebate. See my author page for what's on sale - this is a great time to get some of my pricier titles like Dare to Act and Truth or Dare.

Love is Bliss is also marked down to 99 cents for a limited time - which makes it 49 cents after rebate on ARe today. M-Squared is marked down 30% on ARe, but today's rebate furthers the discount. Can't beat a sale. :)

Monday Muddle: Uniformity

I'd like to thank everybody who commented during the Love Spanks event. The Love Spanks all FF anthology is now for pre-order at Amazon, and is already in the Top 100 of Lesbian eBooks, which is cool. The book should be out at other retailers after Valentine's Day. I'm sure Ana is planning the next spank fiction event now, and I'll be sure to pimp it.

This week I turn in the final of my MM contemporary story, An Arresting Development, to the Sexy to Go team for the second bundle. There is a Thunderclap campaign to help boost awareness of the series as a whole. If you are so inclined, you're welcome to help spread the word. I know there are two schools of thought on Thunderclaps (just as there are two schools of thought on everything), but the link's there to check out.

I recently signed a contract for my MM contemporary short Lyon's Den to an anthology. The announcement still hasn't been made, so I'll wait on further details until the lineup is settled. Still waiting to hear about my fantasy MM short for another anthology, and I'm 25k and 13k respectively into two FF novellas due for different projects. After that, Sexy to Go Volume 3, and I have a good head start on that story, too.

While all this is happening, I hope to save up some money to redo covers of available works. In particular, I'm looking at the M-Squared anthology (ARe / AMZ / BN / KOBO). It's one of my more interesting covers, a personal favorite, and perhaps a tad controversial. It shows nicely when I do booksignings, but people see the snake and freak out. Seriously. I did the Rainbow Book Fair in NYC once, and one man's eyes bugged out. I tried to tell him that there were no snakes in the book, but he wouldn't hear it. I understand people have snake phobias, and the snake doesn't really represent anything in the stories so it's one reason for the change. Plus it's been a few years, and I feel it's time to freshen up the catalog entirely.

Also, I'm planning another all MM anthology, revised editions of SFF and paranormal stories, and I'd like to have some uniformity in covers. In fact, I'd like that for all my self-pub covers so readers know they're mine. Branding. So enjoy this last look at the snake while I shop for cover art. :-)

As for reading, I'm still working on all the books from Friday. Nearing the end of a few, and will have my thoughts on them soon.

TGIF: Time To Read Part VIII - First Contact

So much happening this weekend, online and off. The #LoveSpanks event began today, and the Share the Love Blog hop is on. I'm putting the finishing edits to my next short for the Sexy To Go series. This is an MM erotica story called Arresting Developments. Originally at 5K for a different anthology submission, I've added a thousand words and fleshed out the characters to give them more depth. It's a fun romp, I think, and if you like manlove hot and heavy I hope you enjoy it.

While you're waiting, why not try a book of mine that's ready to read? Truth or Dare was my first published erotic romance, the first in a lengthy series that I will somewhat continue in the summer. You'll meet some characters in the upcoming The Sweetest Dare, and I'll have more information on that soon. I can tell you, it's at 23k now and may go as long as 30k. It's due in April so I need to crack that whip.

~ doesn't seem like I've accomplished much this month so far, but I've been pecking away at a number of books. I'm still working through The Marriage Game by Alison Weir (ARe / AMZ /BN / KOBO) and finding it's taking longer than expected. I've read many of Weir's histories and have found them engaging. This fiction, primarily an account of Elizabeth's relationship with Robert Dudley, is slow to progress. Maybe it's because I know the story so well, or other things distract me. I'd like to finish this weekend.

Two recent finishes include a book I've put off for some time. I picked up Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris (ARe / AMZ / BN / KOBOfrom the local library swap shelf to prime myself for the new season of the TV show. It was...okay. Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs remain two of my favorite thrillers, and I appreciate having this prequel to round out the Hannibal legend. I had avoided it for some time mainly because mediocre reviews of the movie influenced me. Having read all the books now, I'd put it this third because I didn't enjoy Hannibal as much.

I picked up Magnificent Bastards by Rich Hall (AMZ / BN / KOBO) on sight, while browsing shelves. I was a fan of Hall's Sniglets segments on Not Necessarily the News back in the day; in fact, I have some of those books. This is a collection of odd short stories - Hall reads like kind of a further off the wall Jean Shepherd with tales spun of Southern boys attempting an insurance racket to make money, teenagers utilizing social media to raise havoc, and the imagined aftermath of a Kenny Rogers song. You have to appreciate the twisted sense of humor to enjoy a book like this, and while I consider myself the type I liked some stories better than others.

Let's Go Crazy by Alan Light (ARe / AMZ / BN / KOBO) is the story of Purple Rain, the album and the film. It's been a while since I gave a serious review for my rock book blog, and as much as I loved the album I'm interested in this one. About 30 pages in so far. On the same library trip I found Farewell Dorothy Parker by Ellen Meister (ARe / AMZ / BN / KOBO) which has been on the TBR forever. There's a sequel out this month, so I need to get this one read.

Finally, I received This Heart of Mine by Brenda Novak (AMZ / BN / KOBO). For the most part, I enjoyed the Whiskey Creek series, but the last two books featured subplots that spiraled into unpleasing to me territory. Some readers finishing the ARC have said this book redeems the series, and while I said I probably wouldn't finish I do have the book, so maybe I'll allow for another pitch and overlook my 2-3 strike rule. Books are like magnets to me, put one in my hand and I can't not read it.

So that's my weekend, and on top of this a trip to a comic con. Woo hoo!

Share the Love Blog Hop

Welcome to my corner of the Share the Love Blog Hop! There's a giveaway below, and you're welcome to enter. Hope everybody has a good time.

Before I get on with the blog lovin', just want to announce that my story, "Skin" is part of Sexy To Go, Volume 1, now at Kindle! Every month, the Sexy to Go authors will deliver a new bundle of stories in a variety of genres and pairings. If you love reading anything and everything, it's a great set.

Okay, on to sharing the love. :) Definitely have to shout to the authors at Silken Sheets and Seduction. What a great group. Some of us got together to write a box set and I had so much fun with it. Ready for the next one. :)

Not a book/writing blog, but I love The Militant Baker. It's a fun blog, full of body positive inspiration and fashion interest. I'm not a fashionista, but I like reading this blog because one day I may need to wear a fancy dress, and then I'll know where to shop.

I'm a big Bob's Burgers fan, and because I can't eat much in the way of thick, juicy, meaty...ugh. I visit The Bob's Burger Experiment on occasion to drool at the burgers inspired by the show.

AReCafe is great place for authors and publishers to promo. I've guested there many times and hope to again. I've also guested at the Decadent Publishing 1Night Stand blog, which reminds me that I need to write my next one.

Where do you like to hang out online? You can comment if you like, and don't forget my giveaway!
