Monday Muddle: eBooks Now Available to Pre-Order and Buy

The first of the main five Home to Dareville stories, Daring Him, is now available in eBook. This book was previously published as Truth or Dare and has been heavily revised for this release. The remaining four books will come in 2016.

Brady Garriston isn’t ready to call it quits. Just because his girl ditched him and he hasn’t had a hit record in some time doesn’t mean he’s a has-been, right? He just needs to regroup, and what better way to do so than hide out in small town under a different name.

Ellie Shaw envies her cousin’s glamorous NYC life but can’t understand why she’d dump her rock star boyfriend. When Ellie meets new Dareville resident “Gary Stone” she’s struck by his likeness to Brady. Some disguises are easily discovered, though, and she thrills at the beautiful music they make together.

But will Brady’s deception bring on a sour note to their relationship? And what of the secret Ellie is keeping from Brady?

Also available on Amazon for pre-order is Coming Together: Keeping Warm. My story, Blue Eyes - a sci-fi erotica - is included.

Coming Together: Keeping Warm is a collection of erotic fiction edited by Alessia Brio. Proceeds benefit Operation Warm.

Guest Author Kate Hill - Characters' Cars and Who They Are

Please welcome Kate Hill!

At first, the love between Theo and Valentin in Blow by Blow appears to be a case of opposites attract. Outwardly, they couldn't be more different. Valentin is a hulking heavyweight who emanates raw masculinity. Theo is a lean bantamweight who loves to wear makeup. Valentin tends to keep to himself, while Theo is flirty and outspoken, but beyond this, the men share similar traits.

They're both stubborn and highly competitive. Theo might look frivolous, but he takes his responsibilities seriously. Valentin sometimes appears to be cold, but he's fiercely passionate and he will defend those he loves with his very life.

Valentin and Theo both look one way, but often act another. Strangely, their inner selves are blatantly revealed through their cars.

Theo, always thinking of ways to conserve so that he can provide for his family, drives a simple economy car.

Valentin, despite his modest apartment and generally simple lifestyle, drives a pricy sports model.

In Blow by Blow, the heroes' cars say something about who they are. Do you think this is true in real life as well? Are cars just a mode of transportation, or do they say something about their owners?

Blow by Blow
by Kate Hill
M/M Erotic Romance
Release Date: 11/24/2015

A hunky former heavyweight champ and an ass-kicking beauty fight for their lives and their love in a futuristic world of MMA.

Theo "Little Raven" Fisker, is a bantamweight with attitude who plans to make a name for himself in the Radical Warrior Tournament, a prestigious mixed martial arts event. The problem is no team will sign a male fighter who walks out in silver and pink with nail polish to match, until he meets Master Jesse.

Impressed by Theo's talent, Jesse welcomes him onto his up and coming team. Fists and sparks fly when Theo meets gorgeous Valentin Merrickson. Theo draws Valentin out of his protective armor and sparks hope for a life the tough heavyweight never imagined possible. Their love grows, but threats from extremists and an injury that ends Valentin's career in the cage might tear them apart.

"I'm sorry," Valentin said. "That belt must be pretty special to you."

"It is." Theo sighed. "I really need to catch the bus and get to sleep."

"No car?"

"Not yet, but I'm working on it. I used a rental to drive here, but I returned it yesterday."

"Want a ride?"

"Didn't you just get here?"

Valentin shrugged. "I'm done with my drink and I'm in training, too. Ready to go?"

Narrowing his eyes, Theo considered the offer. Just sitting next to Valentin in a car, smelling his cologne, would be enough to make him horny all night. This guy would not be good for his training. Why did he have to join a team that had the most gorgeous man in the universe as its heavyweight champion?

"I'm ready. Just let me get my bag."

"Right here." Liz, who had approached, picked up his black bag from behind the counter and handed it to him.

Theo took it from her.

From the corner of his eye, he noticed a news headline on the widescreen TV above the bar.

"Hey, Liz," said one of the waitresses, stepping behind the bar to turn up the volume.
"The Spellman Hill Vigilante strikes again."

Theo listened to a brief report about two guys who had been knocked unconscious by a helmeted figure while attempting to mug a woman on her way home from work the previous night.

"Spellman Hill Vigilante?" Theo asked.

"Yeah. Over the past year or so a guy in a black helmet has been on the streets stopping crime in and around Spellman Hill. He seems to focus on crimes against the gay community, but not always," said the waitress. "A few of his victims claim he attacked them at random, but I'm not so sure. Cops don't like him for obvious reasons, but I feel a little safer knowing he's around."

"I wish the news would stop sensationalizing this guy," Liz said, shaking her head.

"Hey, in a way he's a hero," Valentin said.

Liz raised her eyes to heaven. "Just as long as he doesn't try to be a 'hero' near my club. If you ask me he's just a wacko."

After saying good night, Theo and Valentin walked out of the club together. Valentin was more than a head taller than Theo, so even with his high-heeled black boots Theo needed to look up to him. He kind of liked it. Hell, he loved it.

Outside they climbed into Valentin's sleek black sports car. It probably cost more than Theo had made fighting over the past couple of years. Still Valentin could probably afford it with little stress. He'd done well in his career and Theo had read several articles in sports magazines that mentioned Valentin's wise business investments.

Smiling, Theo stretched his long legs and leaned back in the leather seat. "I could get used to this."

"I know what you mean," Valentin said under his breath. His blue gaze lingered on Theo's legs and crotch.

"Are you flirting with me, Sunshine?"

"Why not? You've been doing it all day."

Coming Together Giving Back Hop

Thanks to Lisabet Sarai for coming up with this great idea! Visit Coming Together for all the books they offer.

I'm happy to take part in this Coming Together blog hop. I first became aware of this writing group nearly ten years ago, when Alessia Brio and I shared a publisher. She had pitched publishing some of Coming Together's anthologies, and I assisted in editing and promotion. Over the years I helped see the publication of story collections that benefited charities for breast cancer research, HIV/AIDS awareness, disaster relief, and Amnesty International. It's my hope over the years Alessia and Coming Together were able to give much to these worthy groups.

When Alessia decided to publish Coming Together books under its own imprint, I continued to pitch in when I could. I am not the richest person on my block, but I've always believed that even the smallest gesture is worth something in the long run. I suppose it's the way I was raised: you give when somebody needs help. If you have a talent, utilize it for good. I'm a writer, so I put my skills to this use. Since Coming Together's inception, I have contributed to seven volumes, and I have a call out for an eighth. Girl on Girl, the first book I edited for CT, benefits the National Center for Lesbian Rights. I became aware of this group after reading how they have assisted LGBT singles and couples with legal issues. One story of an elderly couple, torn apart because of circumstances, broke my heart. I wanted to do something to help.

My story in Girl On Girl is "A Taste of Vanilla." Here's a, ah, taste:

Hailie watched the onscreen couple embrace and kiss, and swallowed back a catch in her throat. She’d seen her share of love scenes in her favorite soaps and movies, but never two women together, and this looked damn near pornographic by comparison. When Veronique—Hailie assumed she was the blond-haired one—sat back on her heels and slid a hand up the other woman’s thigh, Hailie felt the touch in her heart, then down to her pussy. She knew they were actors, but the emotion appeared genuine, and it certainly moved Hailie.

Veronique edged closer to her lover, pushing out her shadowed pussy to connect with the
other woman’s thigh. The camera zeroed in just as their mounds pressed together and began a slow grind. Light moaning and breathing accompanied their rhythmic lovemaking, drawing Hailie deeper into this world of grainy black and white sin.

Something pressed against her knee. Hailie looked down at Cecile’s fingers tracing a circle on Hailie’s slacks.

She turned to Cecile, whispering despite their seclusion. “You planned this, didn’t you?”

“I wouldn’t call it a plan,” Cecile said. “More of a spontaneous action,” she lifted her hand, “but if you’re uncomfortable I’ll stop—”

“I meant the movie.”

Cecile laughed. “I don’t pick the schedule here.”

“You picked the meeting place,” Hailie pointed out, “and how convenient it was to hook up in time to catch this particular show—”

Cecile silenced her with a kiss, with soft lips and a gentle thrust of her tongue across the seam of Hailie’s closed mouth. She felt warm and the aroma of vanilla strengthened with their closeness. Blood pounded in Hailie’s head, muffling the background noise of Sapphic ecstasy. Hailie couldn’t move—unsure of what to do in return. Open her mouth? Reach over and pull Cecile to her?

The next volume I'll edit will have a theme: racing, biking, and wheels. On Wheels will benefit refugee aid. Submissions have been coming in and I'm excited to see what these great authors have for me. It's heartening to see so many authors interested in contributing to good causes without seeking monetary compensation. All artists, authors, editors and others involved in CT do not get paid for their work. All profits go straight to the charities. If you have a short story to contribute, I know Alessia would be interested in a submission or two.

Speaking of giving, would you like to win a copy of my latest story, Touch of Class, plus an audiobook from my catalog? Comment below with the name of your favorite charity and I'll choose a winner at random. Good luck.

Late Monday Muddle: Damn, It's Cold

I just got word that TOUCH OF CLASS is now on pre-order at Amazon. ARe Books has planned a blog tour for the book and an FB launch party and a Thunderclap for the whole series. I'll share links on my Twitter as I get them. I'm excited about this series, and the story is sort of my last big hurrah for 2015. I'll have stories in Volumes 11 and 12 of Sexy To Go, but one is an updated story and the other is a short that was meant for an anthology submission but I missed the deadline. Beyond this, Sexy To Go is moving to quarterly releases but I haven't decided what to do about that yet.

For Volume 11 of Sexy To Go, I'm submitting a revised version of my story, DULCE. DULCE is more erotic than romantic; in fact, as I look back at the shorts I wrote in my early years they qualify more as straight erotica. Some have happy endings, some are HFN. I find these stories, as I go through them again, are better suited to collections. However, I do wish to write longer and I'll have more news on that another time.

Speaking of shorts, I can announce now that I've signed a second contract with Torquere Press. SNOW ANGELS is a MMM erotic story that will appear in their SNOWED IN anthology in January. It's a fun little romp for readers who enjoy all-male menage. I'd like to try for a few more of their themed anthologies in the new year. We'll see if the schedule allows it.

Right now I'm working on a submission for something to release soon. News on that if it goes through.

S*A*L*E on M/M Romance, Plus a Bit of Kink

Now through the end of November, you can get ONE SWEET RIDE for 99 cents in eBook.

ONE SWEET RIDE was previously published as TASTE THIS, and the follow-up BITTERSWEET, is also available.

Here's the official blurb for Book #1:

Warning – This novella is probably one of the smuttiest Leigh has written. This story features explicit scenes of M/M sex, FFM sex, MMF sex, MMMM sex, and some other combinations. There’s anal, people licking private places, and more. At the core of this story, though, is a love story between two men.

Kelly Landry loves to bake. He’s living the dream, running the busiest bakery cafe in town. At Taste This, people come from all over for his chocolate chip cookies…even from outer space.

Tobin, captain of the Jiu’Kr, can’t satisfy his sweet tooth. He loves Kelly’s cookies, but would prefer to have the hunky chef in his bed. One he gets him aboard the Vectran ship, he shows Kelly how to make every day sweet, and hot. Yet, can Tobin and Kelly live on chocolate and sex alone?

I've had the honor of previewing the other stories coming from ARe Books this December in the Bound To Be Naughty collection. All I can say is, if you enjoy kinky romance your TBR is going to be happy happy happy. I'm thrilled, too, that a few authors I've worked with in the past are part of this multi-author series. Bridget Midway just did an author event this past weekend to show off her latest Phaze book, but you'll have to wait until December to pick up LEARNING THE HARD WAY.

Erzabet Bishop appeared in the first Coming Together anthology I edited (GIRL ON GIRL) but her Bound To Be Naughty story is multiple partners, it's called CRAVE. If you haven't seen all the covers yet, you can view them on ARe's Pinterest Board. There will be a Facebook launch party for these stories, you can check my Twitter for the time and dates.

I have two submissions out, one Leigh and one real name. The Leigh story is for a January anthology, so I'm expecting to hear about that one soon. I recently hit 2k on another anthology submission, due at the end of the week, but as I read the story I find it isn't quite working for me. So I'm at a crossroads here: do I continue and see how it finishes, or shelve the project for a later day and focus on another important WIP? The thing with this deadline MS, though, is the scope of the project is specific. Read: it's a theme that I might not be able to revamp elsewhere. So this means what I've written so far may never see light.

Eh, it happens. How many authors have cut chunks of writing, either without a second thought or with great pain? One thing is for certain, I'm not deducting the words written from my NaNo count!

I've also received word that iBooks shuts down for an extended vacation in the winter. If I want DARING HIM on iTunes before Christmas I need to boogie. Come back next week to see how well, or unwell, I've done.

Monday Muddle: Rainy Days and Mondays...

SEXY TO GO, VOL. 10 is now available at all the major eBook retailers. For this set, I have revamped my MM short, Surveillance.

For the final two installments of 2015, I will include two other previously released shorts. However, if I don't receive word back on a submission to another house, I will swap. I do hope that short gets contracted, though. It's a hot MMM with a bear of man and two younger studs. Been a while since I've written an all-male threebie.

In 2016, Sexy To Go will move to a quarterly release calendar. This means we'll be able to write longer stories, and I think we're doing some themed boxes as well. I'm all for that - the mixed boxes are fun, but I do know readers would enjoy a collection of all alphas, all billionaires, all cowboys, etc. I look forward to seeing what we do here.

COMING TOGETHER: STRANGE SHIFTERS has an original MM short of mine, called "Gator Tail." I had so much fun writing this story, that if time permits I'll expand upon the universe. "Gator Tail" alludes to another MM shifter I wrote, "Fox's Holiday," which is in COMING TOGETHER FOR THE HOLIDAYS. I know wolves, bears, and cats are popular but there's something about the unique shifter that brings out the creativity in me,

For now, I am waiting on the release of TOUCH OF CLASS, my first MF pairing in a while. As I mentioned before, it's part of the All Romance collection BOUND TO BE NAUGHTY, kink and BDSM novellas. Mine is connected to the two 1Night Stand stories I've done for Decadent, but those are both MM. I hadn't intended to write an MF pairing, but when the opportunity came up and I started the story I realized it worked better this way, and there was an opportunity to bring more characters into play. If you missed the cover reveal on AReCafe here it is again:

I do love a nice cover, and Erin Dameron-Hill crafted this one. :-)

I am signed up for NaNoWriMo, under my real name. The project is happening under that name - it's outlined and I'm off to a good start. I have to write my words at night because of the day job, but given my enthusiasm for the project I find the words are coming easier. I may just make it this time. In the meantime, my other name is waiting to hear on a submission and I'm hoping for good news soon. Cross fingers.

Guest Book Blitz: Claimed By Three by Rebecca Airies

Congrats to Rebecca Airies on the release of her new book with Loose ID!

About the Book - Buy Now!

Kassius, Teague, and Berenger are dealing with serious vandalism on their property, but they aren’t waiting any longer to claim Sephanie. They intend to draw the beautiful, curvy woman into their lives with romance and all the sex she can handle while they discover who is behind the trouble.

Sephanie has always wanted a menage and jumps at the chance to date the three sexy men. Their first dates are everything she’s dreamed of and leave her craving more. When vandalism and sabotage begins to focus on her, Sephanie doesn’t understand it, but is determined to stay with her men.

The person behind the attacks won’t stop until he has what he wants. And it seems like what he wants is Sephanie, Kassius, Teague and Berenger are having none of it. Sephanie is their woman, and they’re going to keep her safe.

Tagline: When attacks suddenly begin after she starts dating three men, Sephanie must discover who’s behind it in order to claim her three men.

Sephanie wiped down the counter as closing time approached. She looked up when the door chime sounded. She saw three men entering the store. She recognized them immediately. Kassius, Teague, and Berenger. Since they were here, she’d guess Kassius’s father had a talk with them. She sighed and rested her hand on the dark blue countertop.

Damn, this was going to be awkward. She bit her lip and waited. They strode across the bakery. It was empty, so there was no one to overhear. She didn’t want to hear them apologize.

She couldn’t stop herself from letting her gaze wander over their bodies. All three men’s gazes were locked on her. Berenger’s black hair hung around his face. He looked like he’d been more than a few days without a shave. The dark hair at his jaw was longer than normal. He’d probably been extremely busy at his skimmer repair shop.

She’d noticed if he was busy, he would let his beard go a little wild. That untamed look sent a thrill through her. Muscled, strong, and in shape from hard work, he led the way over to the counter. He didn’t look happy, but he wasn’t obviously angry.

“Hello, Sephanie. I think we need to talk.” Berenger placed his palms on the counter.

“This isn’t necessary.” She tried to forestall the coming apology. “I know what you’re going to say.”

“I doubt you do.” Kassius eased up alongside Berenger and braced an arm on the countertop.

His blue eyes sparkled with some emotion she couldn’t quite read. He was solid, muscular, and strong. Berenger and Teague were also fit and brawny. Kassius’s came from hard physical work in his groves and winery. In contrast, the jut of his high cheekbones and his aquiline nose gave him a refined look. His blond hair hung past his shoulders.

“I realize your father probably talked to you, but there’s no need for this.” She shook her head.

She glanced at Teague when he stopped on the other side of the counter. Teague epitomized the hard training and rough life of the PD. The sharp angles of his jaw and the lean muscles of his body reminded her of a warrior ready for battle. His black hair was short, but shaggy at the moment. He’d probably been growing it out since the regulations for PD on planet were much more relaxed than while they were in space. His light brown skin gleamed and tempted her to reach out and touch him.

“Yes, there is a need for it. We didn’t know you heard our conversation or you misunderstood what we were talking about that day.” Teague leaned closer to the counter. “We didn’t mean it in the way you took it.”

She glared at him. “I misunderstood? What other way could you mean it?”

“We didn’t like guarding you from possible danger, because you might be hurt by it. Yes, we had better things to do than sitting there keeping our distance. We wished we could take you out on dates and get closer to you, but we had to wait. We couldn’t keep our objectivity and watch over you if we became involved with you.” Teague reached over, cupped her chin, and gently turned her head until she looked at him.

She swallowed hard. She wanted to believe them, maybe too much. Without a doubt, she’d had feelings for them since she’d met them. She wanted to take the chance on them.

Although their appearance drew her eyes, it didn’t keep her attention. Their personalities and interactions together did that. She liked the way they backed one another up and always seemed to be there for friends and family. Sephanie came from a family with strong ties. That type of behavior was an important part of what she wanted from a relationship.

“We intend to court you, Sephanie.” Kassius stretched across the counter and clasped her hand.
“Please come out from behind there.”

“You intend to court me? You don’t know me.” With a nod, she let him draw her down the counter and out from behind it. She pursed her lips to keep from smiling. She’d wanted to hear they were interested for a long time.

They stood in front of her but didn’t crowd her. She appreciated that. Even though she longed for physical closeness, they had some things to clear out of the way first.

5-star Quotes fromAdvance Reviews

“… a fantastic selection of tales some shorter novellas and some full length stories but every one is excellent . From a tale about a Phoenix who is a rock star, a wolf shifter , a banshee and also a reaper to name but a few of the characters you will meet in this book there is something to suit all types of people…thanks to this group of authors for a brilliantly written and excellent set of stories.”

–Chelle Turner for Goodreads

“This is the best boxed set I’ve ever read. Such great variety across the paranormal world. I hadn’t heard of most of the authors and it was wonderful to discover them. I highly recommend this set to fans of paranormal and fantasy genres.

“MUSE, by Alexa Silver.. A rock star who is a phoenix, could it get any hotter? The girl who saves him is a paranormal with her own secrets. I loved this story, the characters were engaging and the story line captured me from the start. Great start to this boxed set so far.

“BLISS HOUSE, by Ann Jacobs Wow I don't believe I've read Ann Jacobs before, this was a story that I didn't want to put down. A love story revolving around a 100 year old curse to free 2 spirits. The two living characters had secrets of their own that kept me riveted to my kindle. An emotional roller coaster that had many highs and lows that brought forth laughter and tears. I was really hoping for the HEA at the end and after a couple of hiccups...will they won't they, I certainly was not left disappointed. Bravo Ms Jacobs I look forward to discovering more of your stories.

“LADY’S CHOICE, by J. L. Miller I've never read nor heard of this author, bonus for me to add Ms Miller to my tbr pile. I love a futuristic interstellar story. Two Zelion traders looking for their perfect mate both fall for the same woman. It's a sizzling good time interspersed with action when someone from her past arrives on the scene. The story line flowed well and the characters were fun and sexy.

“HUNTING JOHN DOE, by Anh Leod. Another author I don't know but glad I've found. A bounty hunter who is also hunted. His case is a woman on the run to be brought in dead or alive. Sounds like a western, nope it's set in outer space, his vehicle is a space craft travelling between planets. Lots of action, sizzle and secrets. I want more of this one to see what happens next.

“THE WOODSMAN, by Belle Scarlett Little Red Riding Hood adult style, gives a whole new meaning to the wolf eating her ;) This was a short sizzling tale and I enjoyed it immensely.

“HAUNTING MELODY, by Flo Fitzpatrick A woman and a ghost and her time travel. Back to the year 1919 Ziegfield Follies to see if she could find the identity of the ghost. I loved this one and was so engrossed I nearly missed my train stop.

“THE BANSHEE AND THE REAPER, by Charlotte Boyett-Compo This was different, I loved that this boxed set had such diversity and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“BARED TO HIM, by NY TIMES bestselling author, Jan Springer. Jan was the reason I chose this set, an author I love to read whether its hot or not. Never leaves me disappointed. A great wrap up to this set.”

What Under the Sun Is Going On?

Under the Sun Publishing publishes original boxed sets from various subgenres of romance.

It's October, and UTS kicked off its operations last month with FALLING IN LOVE, eight contemporary romances from sensual to downright erotic (but always classy!).

A division of Inkwell Royalty Solutions, UTS provides a new model for assisted self-publishing, paired with professionally conceived and managed QuickBooks accounting services, where every author can be certain of finding accurate, transparent, and readily available records to keep track of his/her best sellers, worst sellers, relevant expenses and so on.

Initially, UTS has scheduled twelve sets, consisting mostly of revised, re-edited books that have been previously published and whose rights have reverted to authors, or have been self-published previous to their inclusion in UTS sets. A few, however, are novellas being published for the first time in an UTS set. These sets will be released over the next twelve months at more or less monthly intervals. Each has a different theme. The next, for instance, comes out October 20 and has a paranormal theme. ENCHANTED ETERNALLY comes just in time to celebrate the Bewitching Season and is featured in this Media Kit, for which we are grateful to the very talented Belle Scarlett for creating the awesome trailer and animated .gif of our wonderful cover artist, Syneca Featherstone of Original Syn for your enjoyment.

UTS welcomes submissions from multi-published authors of romance, from sweet to downright erotic. We have openings in existing sets, and we're looking to add more sets, possibly during the initial year, of contemporary romances with cowboy, military, western, second-chance, romantic suspense,  and BDSM/menage themes. We also have openings in historical and paranormal sets already scheduled for 2016.

About the Book - Buy Now!

The city hides a lot of secrets. Sometimes, those secrets break free.

Unicorns can’t be real. That’s what Anthony Gates always thought. At least until he saw one murder a man. Now there’s a myth stalking him through the streets of San Francisco. And right when he’s starting in on a very passionate—and promising—relationship.

Leon Phillips is a security guard with a secret. A dangerous secret. One he can’t even share with his new flame, Anthony. But when the mysterious Lionshead organization rears up, he’s left with only two choices: come clean about who he really is, or give up on Anthony forever.

Can their romance survive onslaught from all sides, or will the secrets eat away at what could have been?

I made it through and leaned against the other bar. This bartender wasn’t quite as cute as the first one, but I hardly thought I’d be headed home with either one of them. “Double bourbon, rocks.”

I reached for my wallet to give him my card, start a second tab, but a large, gruff hand wrapped over my wrist. Its partner handed a twenty to the bartender. “I’ll cover it.”

Shit on fire. Someone was actually paying for my drink. Of course, it was probably some old fart who was hoping to get lucky with someone the same age as his fucking grandson. That would be my luck. But I had to show my appreciation. Hopefully I could end the bad situation there.

“Thanks, but you really don’t have to.”

“It’s my distinct pleasure.”

He didn’t sound old. Fuck it. I dared eye contact, and I was fucking thrilled with the outcome. He was tall. Over six feet. Short black hair, clean-shaven, and well-built. Very well-built. He had these big, dark eyes. Almost black and almost too big for his face. His gaze bored into me. Even when I blinked, I could see them, clear as the clearest night sky. He had scars all over his face, neck, and arms. Subtle, but there. And, perhaps most importantly, he had to be somewhere close to my age. Or know a really good plastic surgeon.

“Hi.” I offered him my hand properly. He grabbed it, squeezed it as he shook. Strong.

“Hi. My name’s Leon.”

“Anthony.” I sipped at my drink, but suddenly, I didn’t seem to need it so much. I leaned on the bar and smiled. “So, how about that small talk?”

“Hate it. But I occasionally endure the torment.”

“On what occasions?”

He shrugged but didn’t break eye contact. “Mainly when my conversational partner is lovely enough to warrant the effort.”

“And do I qualify?”

Again, a shrug. Then a smile. It wasn’t a cute smile or a sexy smile or a pretty smile. It was too big, and his teeth were too horsey. That was all right with me. He was real and attractive, not fake and plastic like all the other guys I’d come across in California.

He took a drink of whatever was in his glass. “So the weather’s been pretty good lately.”

“It’s California. The closest thing I’ve seen to bad weather here is an earthquake.”

“Well, that’s not entirely true.” He clinked his glass against mine before continuing. “It rained that one time.”

“Must have been before I moved here.”

“Where’d you move from?”

“Cow country.”

“Not exactly. Our neighbors did the whole cattle thing. My family was always more into horses.” And just like that, the unicorn trotted back into my mind. But it also trotted right back off and let me focus on Leon. “What about you?”

“I’ve pretty much been here my whole life. Moved around to different towns, but the city life always suited me best of all.” He took another drink and finished it most of the way off. “What do you do for a living?”

That was a great question. Totally made me datable material, talking about my dead-end job. “I’m on the night crew down at Michaelson’s Grocery.”

“What do you do?”

So much for my artful dodging. “I’m a stocker. Nothing special, but it pays the bills.” Needed to get off that subject quick. “What about you?”

“Security.” He said it fast. If I wasn’t feeling the liquor so hard, I might have questioned it. And if he wasn’t so damn good-looking and interested in me. For once. “I work for whoever decides to pay me that week.”

“Is it dangerous?”

He snorted. “Hardly. There’s not nearly as much activity as the TV writers would have you think.” He reached over and touched my cheek, rough skin scratching. “How do you feel about kissing strangers, Anthony?” When he pulled his bar stool closer, I didn’t back off. I thought I maybe should have, but I didn’t. I let him touch me. His skin was warm and hard, and he smelled like cut grass and wet dirt. I don’t know why. Maybe it was just my imagination. That was completely possible. But I still breathed deep. If my brain wanted me to think he smelled that perfect, I was going to take full advantage of the delusion.

He kept his hand there for a long time. Longer than I’d ever normally allow a stranger to touch me, sober or not. My heart thumped hard in my chest. Damn it, I felt good. I brushed my fingers through his hair. Soft to the touch.

And then it happened. I leaned forward, balancing my stool on two legs. Given how much liquor I’d had, that was an impressive fucking feat. I hesitated for half a breath just an inch away from him. Close enough to see his pores. Close enough to feel his gentle breath, hot and scented like whatever fruity cocktail he’d been drinking.

I leaned in that extra inch and pressed my lips to his. Not long. Hardly more than a peck. No tongue. But it still sparked inside me, lighting something animal to life in my core. I snuffed it out. Or tried…and failed. It remained there even as the heat of embarrassment took hold.

“Was that all right?”

“No complaints from me.” The big toothy smile again. “In fact, I think we should do it again.” He scooted even closer, weaving his legs between mine. He whispered the next part. “Go ahead.”

It took me a bit to believe it, to believe he really wanted to kiss again. But he didn’t pull back when I leaned closer. I parted my lips, conformed to the curve of his mouth. I dared a flash of tongue, just the slightest brush against his teeth. His tongue touched mine just as I went to pull back, and the sensation stuck there, lingering in my mouth.

I looked into the big, dark eyes. The skin crinkled around them as he laughed. “Well, I think that was okay, don’t you?”

About the Author

After years on hiatus, Raven de Hart has once again picked up her pen to write her salacious stories and tantalizing tales. And the occasional lewd limerick, if she's had enough wine. Her short work has been published in various anthologies from Cleis Press and Bold Strokes Books, among others. She is also the author of a variety of books, including Wild Ride and Silverfall. When she is not writing, she can be found tending her herb garden, playing with her Basset Hounds, and trying to figure out this new-fangled internet fad.
